This year the draft was dominated by linemen with over 15 going in the first round.

It's hard to imagine there ever having been an awards selection show before quite like the one held in Saint Arnold's beer hall Wednesday night.

Certainly, not in the often staid, strict, traditional world of college football honors.

But there was the Lombardi Award trophy sitting on the long bar for anyone to come up and examine, free pizza and beer being served to the guests who found their way in on a rainy evening, new Lombardi Award T-shirts and hats being sold and sports radio station 1560 The Game broadcasting live from the corner. And the Houstonians who showed (and asked) got to hear the four finalists for the 41st Lombardi Award — named after legendary coach Vince Lombardi and given to the best college lineman in the country every year since 1970 — before even the players themselves.

Two Rotary Lombardi Award contenders are finalists for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

Two Rotary Lombardi Award candidates have been named finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. They are Utah's Zane Beadles and TCU's Jerry Hughes.

To be eligible for the CLASS award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior in the Football Bowl Subdivision and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates that were announced in September.

Lowe’s will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner in early January 2010.

Rotary Lombardi Award at Houston vs. Texas Tech game

The Rotary Lombardi Award will be at Robertson Stadium for the Texas Tech-Houston football game this Saturday, Sept. 26. The sold-out game begins at 8:15 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.

From 4-6 p.m., fans are encouraged to bring their cameras and have their picture taken with the famous trophy by visiting the Wendy's parking lot across from Robertson Stadium (on Scott Street) where "1560 The Game" will be hosting a remote broadcast.

Then from 6-8 p.m., the Rotary Lombardi Award will be located at the H Club Tailgate Tent right next to where many fans will enter the stadium.

Indiana defensive end Jammie Kirlew earned a spot on the 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, honoring dedicated and hard-working student-athletes for their off-the-field achievements and selfless contributions to their communities. Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) have announced Tuesday the 22 student-athletes chosen for the prestigious honor.

On the field, Kirlew has helped the Hoosiers jump out to just the 14th 3-0 start in school history. Kirlew appears on the Ted Hendricks, Chuck Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi Award Watch Lists. He has moved into third on IU's tackles for loss career list (43.5) and jumped into fifth on the career sacks chart (19).

"All-Conference linebacker and Lombardi Award watch list member, Bear Woods is returning to the field on Saturday. Woods was ruled ineligible for the first two gamed of this season because of red shirt violations during his freshman years in 2006.
“It was like torture,” Woods said about not being able to play in the first two games.
"I’m ready to explode on Saturday,” the linebacker said with a smile. Woods finished with 108 tackles and two sacks in 2008."

Courtney Brown has been featured as one of the best ever to don the Penn State uniform. Brown, who holds the NCAA record for career sacks (33), was a Rotary Lombardi Award finalist in 1999 alongside teammate LaVar Arrington. Virginia Tech's Corey Moore ultimately won the award.
Brown was the #1 pick overall in the 2000 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.
